Antimicrobial Wound Dressing Market Projected to witness a Single Digit CAGR during 2023 – 2030 | Smith & Nephew plc. ConvaTec Group plc. Medtronic plc

July 10th, 2023 Coherent Market Insights Releases

Antimicrobial Wound Dressing Market Analysis

In anterior cruciate ligament surgery, bio-absorbable screws are the preferred choice as they are automatically absorbed in the body. Biodegradable bone screws offer several benefits, including MRI imaging of the bone post-surgery, no long-term interference with the surrounding tissues, eliminating the need for bone screw removal surgery, reducing the risk of metal screw-related infections, and reducing the amount of stress in the surrounding tissues.

Wound dressings that are designed to inhibit the growth of microorganisms are referred to as antimicrobial wound dressings. These dressings contain antimicrobial agents, biologics like growth factors, or materials derived from animal sources. The purpose of these dressings is to prevent bacterial penetration into the wound and inhibit the growth of microorganisms. Antimicrobial agents commonly used in wound dressings include silver, iodine, chlorhexidine, Polyhexamethylbiguanide (PHMB), alginate, and hydrocolloids.

Antimicrobial Wound Dressing Market Drivers

Advanced wound dressings such as antimicrobial and anti-infective wound dressings have proven to be more effective than conventional wound dressings in promoting faster wound healing. They are commonly used post-operation to prevent the risk of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs). The superior functional efficiency and effectiveness of antimicrobial wound dressings have led to their increasing preference over conventional wound dressings.

The global market for antimicrobial wound dressings is expected to grow during the forecast period due to the rising incidence of burns, trauma wounds and injuries, and diabetic ulcers. According to data published in the African Journal of Emergency Medicines by the World Health Organization (WHO) in January 2017, burn cases result in about 18 million disability cases and over 250,000 deaths annually, with more than 90% of the deaths reported in low- and middle-income economies. In 2016, the U.S. fire department responded to approximately 1.3 million fire incidences, resulting in 3,280 civilian deaths and 15,700 civilian injuries reported by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Chronic wounds have a considerable effect on the health and well-being of patients and their families, resulting in pain, emotional stress, limitations in daily activities, and prolonged hospital stays, as well as chronic morbidity. This can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and distress. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), published data from October 2014 showed that pressure ulcers affect over 2.5 million people in the U.S. each year, with associated healthcare costs ranging from US$ 9.1 billion to US$ 11.6 billion annually.

The global market for antimicrobial wound dressings is expected to grow as more healthcare providers adopt them for managing acute and chronic wounds. This is due to the ability of these dressings to provide antimicrobial protection, which is particularly important for preventing infections in wound treatment. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Arthroplasty in June 2014 reported that the use of Aquacel surgical dressings from ConvaTec Inc. led to a significant reduction in the incidence of acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total joint arthroplasty.

Antimicrobial Wound Dressing Market Restraints

The classification of antimicrobial wound dressings is a challenge as they don’t fit neatly into the FDA’s current medical device classification system. This makes it difficult to market and gain regulatory approval for these products. To address this issue, in September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) formed an advisory panel to gather recommendations on the appropriate regulatory classification for wound dressings containing drugs.

Antimicrobial wound dressings have traditionally been marketed through the 510(k) process under product code FRO as unclassified and pre-amendment devices. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding the classification of these dressings as Class II or Class III medical devices. The FDA’s decision to regulate wound dressings containing drugs will have an impact on medical device manufacturers. Class II classification is appropriate for antimicrobial dressings, as it allows manufacturers to easily demonstrate their safety and effectiveness. Upgrading to Class III would require manufacturers to comply with stricter regulatory guidelines. This could lead to an increase in the price of antimicrobial wound dressings and may prolong the launch of the product, which could limit the future growth of the antimicrobial wound dressing market.

Antimicrobial Wound Dressing Market – Regional Analysis

The global antimicrobial wound dressing market is segmented into different regions such as North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Africa. The North American market is expected to witness significant growth in the upcoming years due to the presence of major market players, high adoption rate of antimicrobial wound dressing by healthcare professionals and patients, and a rising number of trauma, wound injuries, and ulcers cases in the region. As per the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), around 2.5 million people in the U.S. are estimated to develop pressure ulcers annually.

The rural areas in the emerging economies of Asia, Latin America, and Africa are seen as potentially profitable areas for market growth. In these regions, countries such as India, Brazil, China, and Indonesia predominantly use cotton gauze and sterile cotton due to their easy availability and cost-effectiveness. Consequently, the demand for expensive antimicrobial wound dressings is low in these economies. However, with the high economic growth of these regions and increasing government focus on improving healthcare infrastructure, major market players are introducing low-cost advanced products, which is expected to boost the growth of the antimicrobial wound dressing market.

Antimicrobial Wound Dressing Market – Competitor

The market comprises several key players, such as Smith & Nephew plc, ConvaTec Group plc, Medtronic plc (Covidien plc), Acelity L.P. Inc. (Kinetic Concepts, Inc.), Coloplast A/S, Mölnlycke Health Care, B. Braun Melsungen AG, and Paul Hartmann AG.

Major players in the antimicrobial wound dressings market are adopting various inorganic growth strategies to broaden their product range. A case in point is Acelity L.P. Inc. that entered into an agreement to acquire Crawford Healthcare in June 2018. Crawford Healthcare is a prominent player in the development and commercialization of innovative treatments for skin care and repair.
