RetroPerc® wins 2023 Gold Medal Edison Award™ for Innovation in Minimally Invasive Medicine
Nephrostomy creation device enables safer renal punctures for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedure.
JERSEY CITY, NJ (April 24, 2023) — RetroPerc®, Inc.’s Nephrostomy Puncture Wire Set won top honors in the Minimally Invasive Medicine category of the 2023 Edison Best New Products Award™ held in Fort Myers, FL on April 20, securing the Gold Medal for its FDA-cleared device.
Safer, easier & quicker removal of large kidney stones
The RetroPerc® flexible puncture wire set enables the removal of large stones from the kidney or upper ureter by advancing the wire from the inside to outside direction, simplifying the complex percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedure urologists perform.
Threading the wire up through a ureteroscope and then through the kidney rather than puncturing from outside in greatly reduces the complexity and bloodiness of the procedure; makes it quicker and easier for clinicians to learn and perform; reduces the amount of image-guidance of the puncture, which in turn reduces the patient’s exposure to radiation; and ensures maximum renal protection, reducing or preventing infundibular injury. It also requires a smaller surgical team, enabling more procedures to be scheduled and reducing cost to the patient and hospital.
Billing code
In 2022 the American Urological Association endorsed CPT code 52334 for the ureteroscopy-assisted retrograde nephrostomy (UARN) procedure, which the RetroPerc® device enables.
“We are grateful to the Edison Award scientific committee for recognizing RetroPerc®’s advancement of urologic practice and for spotlighting the device’s ability to make large-stone removal safer for patients,” said Jason B. Wynberg, MD, FACS.
