Gastrointestinal Devices Market 2023 | Scope of Current and Future Industry 2030 | Boston Scientific Corporation, Johnson & Johnson Ltd., Covidien Ltd., Fujinon Ltd.

March 3rd, 2023 Coherent Market Insights Releases

Gastrointestinal refers to something that happens in the digestive tract. To put it simply, a tract is a network of connected organs or a series of interconnected anatomical structures. Diseases of the digestive system (the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, rectum, and large intestine) are collectively known as gastrointestinal disease. The gallbladder, liver, and pancreas are also possible sites of involvement. The gastrointestinal system (also referred to as the GI, GI tract,  digestive tract, alimentary canal, GIT, or gut) is the system of organs responsible for the intake of food, the breakdown of that food into its component parts, the absorption of the nutrients and energy they contain, and the elimination of waste products (urine and feces) from the body. All animals with bilateral symmetry, or bilaterians, have a digestive system. Its primary function is as a conduit for food to reach the various digestive organs. Large bilaterians usually have a scatological outlet where waste can be eliminated. However, some small bilaterians have no exit or opening and must excrete solid wastes orally or through another mechanism.

To examine the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, medical professionals use what are known as gastrointestinal devices. Gastrointestinal devices detect infections or abnormalities in the normal functioning of this system. The device is effective in diagnosing esophageal, gastric, and duodenal inflammation, tumors, and other gastrointestinal tract disorders. Gastrointestinal devices are useful for both diagnosing and treating these conditions. Diseases of the digestive tract include GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease), colon cancer, ulcer, hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. The rising incidence of these conditions, brought on by our increasingly sedentary culture and the fast food we eat, is expected to fuel the expansion of the global gastrointestinal devices market.

Gastrointestinal Devices Market Taxonomy

Based on the product type, the market of gastrointestinal devices worldwide is classified into:

  • GI endoscopes
  • GI accessories
  • GI instruments

Based on the end user, the market of gastrointestinal devices worldwide is classified into:

  • Diagnostic Centers
  • Ambulatory Surgical Centers
  • Hospitals
  • Others

The global gastrointestinal devices market is expected to expand because of the rising demand for minimally invasive procedures. Many complications from traditional open surgeries have resulted in their replacement around the world by gastrointestinal devices used in hospitals. Examples of potential post-op problems with traditional open surgeries include blood clots, exhaustion, pain, infection, and muscle atrophy. Reduced postoperative risks, shorter hospital stays, lower costs, shorter recovery times, and better outcomes are just a few of the reasons for the growing popularity of minimally invasive surgeries. Overall, these factors are expected to drive the gastrointestinal devices market forward.

The global gastrointestinal devices market is expected to grow as a result of factors including the rising incidence of colorectal cancer and the prevalence of gastro esophageal reflux disease.

Healthline reported in 2012 that people over the age of 40 and pregnant women have an increased risk of developing gastro esophageal reflux disease. According to the report, the prevalence of the disease among pregnant women increases over time, reaching 25% in some studies. Approximately 65% of patients with acid reflux are 40 or older. In North America especially, the prevalence of gastro esophageal reflux disease is increasing at a frightening rate. The high prevalence of fast food and inactivity in the area are major contributors to this trend. Approximately 50,260 deaths from colorectal cancer are anticipated in the United States in 2017, as reported by the American Cancer Society. Because of this, the market for gastrointestinal devices in this area is anticipated to expand at a particularly high rate during the predicted time frame.

Current players in the market for gastrointestinal devices include Boston Scientific Corporation, Johnson & Johnson Ltd., Covidien Ltd., Fujinon Ltd., Stryker Corporation, Conmed Corporation, Medtronic, Karl Storz, and Olympus Corporation.

Key Developments

The market’s major players are increasingly interested in implementing acquisition strategies to broaden their range of offerings. In March of 2018, for instance, Boston Scientific announced that it had acquired EMcision, Limited, a privately held firm based in the United Kingdom. The HabibTM EndoHPB probe is an innovative endoscopic bipolar radiofrequency device that coagulates tissue in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and the acquisition is expected to add this product to Boston Scientific’s endoscopy portfolio.

Red Dot Award in the field of “Product Design 2019” was given to the KARL STORZ HyDome Endoscopy system in April 2019 for its exceptional design and usability.

Leaders in the industry are concentrating on introducing novel products to broaden their offerings. For instance, Olympus Corporation released EndoBRAIN in February 2019; it’s a public platform for artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted diagnosis during endoscopic procedures.
