GERD is a medical condition characterized by the backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus, caused by a weakened or improperly functioning lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Normally, the LES opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and then closes to prevent stomach acid and food from flowing back up into the esophagus. When the LES is weakened, however, the stomach contents can flow back up into the esophagus, causing gastroesophageal reflux.the term “gastroesophageal” refers to the stomach and esophagus, while “reflux” means to flow back. It is believed by many doctors that the presence of a hiatal hernia may weaken the LES and increase the risk of GERD. A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach moves up into the chest through a small opening in the diaphragm, which is the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen.
Although recent research has shown that the diaphragmatic hiatus or opening can provide support for the anterior end of the esophagus, many people with a hiatal hernia may not experience symptoms of reflux. However, in some hiatal hernia patients, stomach contents can flow directly into the esophagus, leading to GERD symptoms.
The treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) depends on the severity of the disease. In the early stages of the disease, treatment options include antacids, dietary and lifestyle modifications, and H2-receptor antagonists. However, if these treatments fail to produce results, patients may be prescribed proton pump inhibitors. In more severe cases, invasive and noninvasive treatment methods are available.Invasive treatment options include surgeries such as Linx, Esophy X, and Endocinch endoluminal gastroplication, while noninvasive techniques include the Stretta technique. According to a report from Florida Hospital, an estimated 60 million adults in the U.S. experience gastroesophageal reflux every month, with around 25 million experiencing daily symptoms. The report also indicates that approximately 20% of people with gastroesophageal reflux may develop GERD.

During the forecast period, the market for devices used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is expected to experience significant growth. This can be attributed to the increasing investment and research in the field of GERD treatment, as well as the growing adoption of treatment devices by practitioners worldwide. Compared to other treatment options, devices offer high precision and minimal side effects, which is contributing to their rising popularity. Moreover, the introduction of innovative treatment processes and cost-effective devices is expected to further drive growth in the GERD devices market in the coming years.
The market for gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment devices will be driven by rising GERD prevalence and an ageing population.
According to Healthline, individuals who are pregnant or over the age of 40 are at a greater risk of developing gastroesophageal reflux disease. The report estimates that around 25% of pregnant women experience symptoms of the disease, which tend to increase over time. Additionally, approximately 65% of individuals with acid reflux are aged 40 or older.
The incidence of gastroesophageal reflux disease is rising at an alarming rate, particularly in North America, due to dietary habits. As a result, the GERD treatment devices market in this region is expected to experience significant growth during the forecast period.
There are several companies operating in the global market for gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment devices, including C. R. Bard, Inc., MEDERI THERAPEUTICS INC., Medigus Ltd., Torax Medical, Inc., and EndoGastric Solutions

Important Events
Significant efforts are being made by major institutions to advance the diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease through novel approaches. For example, researchers from Kiryu University in Japan published a report in the journal MDPI Gastrointestinal Disorders in August 2019, outlining the development of an organ-specific chronic inflammation-remodeling-carcinoma sequence for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
In February 2019, EndoGastric Solutions shared positive results from a clinical trial of their EsophyX device, demonstrating improved PH rates and clinical outcomes in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease who underwent a transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) 2.0 procedure.
Additionally, a computer-aided algorithm has been developed by researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in November 2018 to evaluate the characteristics of subsurface hyposcattering structures in Barrett’s esophagus, which is a complication of chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease, using clinical volumetric laser endomicroscopy data.
Key players in the market are also focused on raising funds to support their research and development efforts. For instance, EndoGastric Solutions raised US$ 45 million in a Series I financing round in May 2019 to accelerate the commercialization of the Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication procedure performed with the EsophyX device.
