Overview:
Injuries to the brain can occur at any time after birth or due to external forces. Both traumatic and acquired circumstances can lead to brain damage. The term “traumatic brain injury” (TBI) refers to any change in brain function attributable to an external force. Alternatively, an acquired brain injury is one that occurs after birth. A brain injury that develops over time is called an acquired brain injury, as opposed to one that develops at birth or is caused by a preexisting condition. A stroke, tumor, electric shock, lack of oxygen, or a lightning strike is all potential causes of acquired brain injury.
Falls (40.5%), automobile accidents (14.3%), being struck by or against something (15%), and assault (10.7%) are the leading causes of traumatic brain injury, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Injury Prevention Center. About one-fifth of the reasons are puzzling. About 2,685 people lose their lives and 37,000 are hospitalized every year because of traumatic brain injury.
Concussion (TBI), diffuse axonal injury (TBI), contusion (TBI), second impact syndrome (TBI), penetrating injury (TBI),coup contre coup injury (TBI), hypoxic brain injury (ABI), locked in syndrome (TBI), anoxic brain injury (ABI), open and closed head injuries (OHBI), and shaken baby syndrome (SBS) are all examples of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Most often, hospitals use costly MRI or CT scans to diagnose these kinds of brain injuries. In the event of an emergency, for military purposes, or when an ambulance is needed, a portable device that can assist in determining whether or not an MRI or CT scan is necessary would be invaluable. However, a portable brain injury scanner cannot replace a CT scan. It’s meant solely as a preliminary screening device to help determine which patients should undergo CT scanning and neurosurgical intervention first. It wasn’t until 2011 that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States finally green-lighted the first of its kind, the Infrascanner Model 1000.

Wide Applications
The portable brain injury scanner has many potential medical applications, including but not limited to emergency rooms, field hospitals, the military, ambulance services, intensive care units, remote locations, and sports medicine. The U.S. Marine Corps has begun using the Infrascanner, a patient-screening device based on near infrared (NIR) technology. Infrascanner is a handheld device that has been cleared by the FDA and marked with the CE symbol, allowing doctors to gain insight into how the brain is currently functioning and spot early warning signs of damage. In addition, this device may find widespread use in emergency rooms for diagnosing brain injuries.
Yet to Begin in the Advanced Regions
Opportunity exists in the United States, Canada, and Europe for portable brain injury scanners, but they have yet to be developed. An MRI or CT scan, both of which can be quite pricey, may be necessary to diagnose a head injury, necessitating a trip to the hospital. The high cost of MRI and CT scans can be avoided by using this device to determine whether or not they will be necessary. Recently, the National Institutes of Health awarded Neural Analytics USD 3 Mn to support the company’s work on a portable brain monitoring system.
Emerging economies like China, India, Russia, Brazil, and are eager to acquire this cutting-edge technology as well, because it will allow them to reduce the likelihood of complications that arise when transporting a patient with a traumatic brain injury to the closest hospital for a CT scan. Technology will advance as more is learned about it, leading to greater precision and the ability to integrate with IT so that reports can be accessed from anywhere at any time.
The main companies in the market of portable brain injury market are BrainScope Company, Inc., Neural Analytics, and InfraScan, Inc.
Key Developments
Most hospitals and clinics are investing in portable brain injury scanners for use during brain operations. For instance, in July 2019, Overlook Medical Center of Atlantic Health System used the ROSA Brain robot is a minimally invasive scanner for brain surgery developed by Zimmer Biomet. When it comes to evaluating people with epilepsy, Overlook Medical Center in New Jersey was the first to use magnetoencephalography (MEG).
A rise in the number of hospitals opening neuro-critical care units should lead to a rise in the number of people using handheld scanners for assessing brain injuries. For instance, a novel neuro-critical care unit opened in August 2019 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Missouri, United States.
The market is expected to grow as a result of rising startup activity. IIM Ahmedabad’s incubator helped a company called Bioscan Research, which makes handheld diagnostic tools for brain injuries; get its start in business in September 2017.
