Overview:
Hereditary deafness is transferred from parents to the child or can also develop over time during childhood or adulthood. It can be either conductive hearing loss or sensorineural hearing loss. Hearing loss that is present at birth is known as congenital hearing loss. Otosclerosis, Usher syndrome, and Pendred syndrome are some common hereditary factors that are responsible for hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common form of permanent hearing loss. It results from damage to the hair cells in the inner ear or to the nerve pathways between the inner ear and the brain. Sensorineural hearing loss is permanent.

Drivers:
Increasing prevalence of hearing loss around the world is expected to boost the growth of the global hereditary deafness market over the forecast period. For instance, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2050, more than 2.5 billion people are projected to have some degree of hearing loss and over 700 million will require hearing rehabilitation. While, 1 billion adults are at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices.
Moreover, frequent approvals and launches of novel products are expected to augment growth of the global hereditary deafness market during the forecast period. For instance, in June 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval to Cochlear Limited to lower the age of cochlear implantation from 12 months to 9 months for children with bilateral, profound sensorineural hearing loss.
In December 2019, Cochlear Limited announced the U.S. FDA clearance of the new Cochlear Osia 2 System, a category of bone conduction hearing solutions that uses digital piezoelectric stimulation to bypass damaged areas of the hearing system to send sound vibrations directly to the inner ear (cochlea).
In August 2020, MED-EL USA announced that the U.S. FDA has approved the new slim and lightweight RONDO 3 Audio Processor for the SYNCHRONY Cochlear Implant System.
Furthermore, increasing number of clinical trials is expected to aid in the growth of the global hereditary deafness market. For instance, in July 2020, Pipeline Therapeutics initiated a Phase 1/2a trial of gamma secretase inhibitor, PIPE-505, a small molecule gamma secretase inhibitor (GSI), in sensorineural hearing loss associated with hearing speech in noisy environments.
Regional Insights:
Among regions, North America is expected to witness robust growth in the global hereditary deafness market due to high prevalence of hearing loss in this region. For instance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2019, over 98% of U.S. newborns were screened for hearing loss, of which, around 6,000 infants were identified with a permanent hearing loss. The prevalence of hearing loss was 1.7 per 1,000 babies in 2019.
Moreover, Europe is expected to witness significant growth in the global hereditary deafness market due to the increasing focus on the development of advanced hearing aids and increase in research and development activities. For instance, in August 2020, GN Hearing announced the launch of ReSound ONE, a new, revolutionary hearing aid to solve one of the most enduring challenges for people with hearing loss.
Competitive Landscape:
Major players active in the global hereditary deafness market are Pipeline Therapeutics, Inc., Frequency Therapeutics, Decibel Therapeutics Inc., Oticon Medical, GN Hearing, RION Co., Ltd., Audina Hearing Instruments Inc., Sonova Hearing India Pvt., Nurotron Biotechnology Inc., Advanced Bionics, MED-EL GmbH, Envoy Medical Corporation, and Cochlear Medical Device Company India Pvt Ltd., among others.
