Market snapshot

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is a ‘molecular cytogenetic technique in which using molecular probes, any type of chromosomal abnormalities can be encountered precisely by hybridization. It was developed by biomedical researchers in the early 1980s to detect and localize the presence or absence of specific DNA sequences on chromosomes. FISH is often used for finding specific features in DNA for use in genetic counseling, medicine, and species identification. The karyotyping takes at least 3 to 4 days to complete the entire process while the FISH method is rapid, one can get results within a day. Further, the cell culture process is not needed for performing FISH which is one of its most important advantages. Identification of specific chromosomal abnormality, especially structural as well as numerical; chromosomal deletion, duplication, and translocation can be detected using the fluorescence in situ hybridization. By using variations like SKY and M-FISH, new non-random genetic abnormalities can be identified as well. FISH can also be used to detect and localize specific RNA targets in cells, circulating tumor cells, and tissue samples.

Market Dynamics

Drivers:

The growing impetus of the market is attributed to factors such as increasing prevalence of genomic abnormalities & cancers and growing adoption of new techniques for molecular-based cytogenetics. Often parents of children with a developmental disability want to know more about their child’s conditions before choosing to have another child. These concerns can be addressed by analysis of the parents’ and child’s DNA. In cases where the child’s developmental disability is not understood, the cause of it can potentially be determined using FISH and cytogenetic techniques. Examples of diseases that are diagnosed using FISH include Prader-willi syndrome, Angelman syndrome, 22q13 deletion syndrome, chronic myelogenous leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Velocardiofacial syndrome, and down syndrome. Furthermore, FISH can be used to form a diagnosis, to evaluate prognosis, or to evaluate remission of a disease, such as cancer. Treatment can then be specifically tailored. Therefore, the demand of FISH Probes in the medical sector has been increasing due to its function in analyzing biomarkers in tumor cells. Moreover, growing adoption of new techniques for molecular-based cytogenetics is also propelling market growth. By using variations like SKY and M-FISH, new non-random genetic abnormalities can be identified as well. Spectral karyotyping or multicolor FISH is a modification of native FISH in which using the different colored sequence-specific probe each chromosome can be painted thus, chromosomal rearrangement can be encountered precisely.

Restraints:

One of the biggest challenges of using FISH Techniques is its high cost. The expense of performing an advanced FISH test with complicated image analysis might be more than US$ 200,000, which hinders its adoption in research labs.

Opportunities:

Investments in pharmacogenomics and pharmaceutical research is expected to provide a lucrative opportunity for the expansion of molecular FISH testing market.

Regional Analysis

North America dominates the Global Molecular FISH Testing Market
