Laxatives Market Detailed Analysis, Growth Factors, Top Key Companies, Trends, Developments and Forecast by 2027; Coherent Market Insights™

November 12th, 2021 Coherent Market Insights Releases

Market Overview

Laxatives are defined as chemical substances that help in improving stool mobility and bowel movement and thereby preventing constipation. Growing cases of medical disorders such as eating disorders and rising cases of constipation is expected to drive growth of the global laxatives market during the forecast period. Excessive consumption of laxatives can lead to various health complications including diarrhea, dehydration, chronic constipation, and blood in the stool. However, laxative abuse remains a common issue. According to a study published in National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in 2010, people abusing laxatives can be divided into four groups.  The largest group is comprised of people suffering from eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia, and prevalence of abuse in this group ranges from 10% to 60%, according to the same study. The remaining three categories are – individuals who began using laxatives when constipated but didn’t after getting better; individuals who are involved in sports activities such as weight lifting, and surreptitious laxative abusers.

Market Dynamics- Drivers

Increasing cases of constipation is expected to drive growth of the global laxatives market during the forecast period. Constipation is one of the most widely diagnosed gastrointestinal disorders across the globe. According to the report published by Canadian Digestive Health Foundation in 2014, 1 out of 4 people living in Canada recorded to have symptoms of constipation in 2014. Chronic constipation rates for women were almost twice as high as for men in Canada.

Moreover, growing cases of constipation were also observed in various developed countries such as the U.K. and the U.S. According to a report published by Coloplast—a global leading player in ostomy care, urology and continence care, and wound and skin care, 1 in 7 adults were affected by constipation during 2014 – 2015 in the UK. The condition was even worse for children, wherein 1 in 3 were affected by constipation during 2014-2015.

These observations are similar in emerging economies such as China, Brazil, and India. According to Abbott Gut-Health Survey, around 14% of the urban population in India suffered from chronic constipation in 2015. Since these people are from urban areas, where healthcare services improving rapidly, the number patients is expected to increase thereby accelerating growth of the market.

Rising cases of eating disorders and growing availability over-the-counter laxatives is expected to propel the global laxatives market growth over the forecast period. Many developed countries such as Germany, Australia, the U.S., and the U.K. have witnessed massive surge in cases of eating disorders. A report commissioned by Beat in 2015, estimated that over 725,000 people were affected by the disease in UK. According to South Carolina Department of Mental Health (DMH) around 8 million people, including seven million women and one million men in the U.S. were recorded suffering from an eating disorder, in 2015.

Patients with eating disorders are most likely to overuse laxatives. Furthermore, laxatives are available as OTC, which has led to its excessive use thereby propelling the market growth.

Market Dynamics- Restraints

Unwillingness of patients to consult doctors regarding constipation is expected to hinder the global laxatives market growth over the forecast period. A large pool of patients are embarrassed to consult doctors regarding constipation, even in the developed countries. According to the study released by Coloplast in 2015, around 1 in 5 (i.e. 20%) people in UK, reportedly felt embarrassed to talk to their GP about constipation. This has resulted in underreporting of the people suffering from this condition.

Furthermore, in emerging economies such as India, people do not feel necessary to consult doctor for constipation, especially in rural parts. This negligence is due to low accessibility to healthcare facility, lack of literacy, higher self-medication practices, and low per-capita income. Hence, such factors are expected to hinder the market growth in the near future.
