Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) was specifically designed for patients suffering from auditory nerve damage and Neurofibromatosis Type II (NF2) to improve stimulation of brainstem auditory neurons and enhance speech recognition. The device stimulates cochlear nucleus using an array of surface electrodes and these stimuli are controlled by an external processor that is programmed using advanced stimulation and processing techniques developed specifically for cochlear implants. Placement of ABI electrode is guided through electrically evoked auditory brainstem response during the surgery. The auditory brainstem implant provides auditory reception in patients with severe inner ear malformation, and are ineligible for cochlear implant due to anatomical limitations. ABI bypasses the cochlear nucleus using a multichannel surface array in patients with severe cochlear and retrocochlear disorders.
Auditory brainstem implants have played a crucial role in the clinical management of severe and profound hearing loss and the eligibility and selection criteria has expanded to include non-NF2 patients who have severe inner ear malformation and in whom cochlear implantation is contraindicated. Increasing advancements in electrode technology and rising number of product launches are some other key factors expected to drive market growth over the forecast period. However, high costs associated with ABIs, lack of awareness, and shortage of skilled professionals are some factors that could restrain market revenue growth to a certain extent over the forecast period.
Some Key Highlights from the Report:
- Major cochlear malformation segment is expected to register significantly fast revenue growth rate over the forecast period attributable to increasing use of auditory brainstem implants to treat severe hearing loss in patients with cochlear malformations, rising incidence of inner ear malformations and congenital hearing loss in children, and constant technological advancements in ABIs.
- Pediatric segment is expected to account for largest revenue share over the forecast period owing to increasing preference for auditory brainstem implants to treat profound hearing loss in children, rising evidence demonstration safety and efficacy of these devices to treat severe retrocochlear deafness in pediatric patients, and availability of advanced healthcare facilities.
- Hospital segment is expected to register significantly fast revenue CAGR over the forecast period attributable to establishment of well-developed healthcare facilities, availability of advanced medical and surgical equipment, and growing network of dedicated hospitals that offer services only for Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) disorders.
- Asia Pacific market is expected to register a robust revenue CAGR during the forecast period attributable to rising incidence of hearing loss among adults and children, availability of advanced healthcare facilities, and increasing number of awareness programs to encourage adoption of auditory brainstem implants to treat profound hearing loss.
- Major companies profiled in the global market report include Cochlear Limited, Med-EL, Oticon Medical, Nurotron’s Biotechnology Co. Ltd., Sonova Holding AG, Advanced Bionics, and Hangzhou Nurotron Biotechnology.
