Global ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Elimination) Toxicology Testing Market

Toxicology testing is a process of identifying the extent to which an agent of interest negatively affects the normal biochemical processes of an individual organism, given a particular exposure period, route of entry, and specific substance concentration. A wide variety of toxic agents have been identified over the years, from fertilizers and household cleaners to pesticides and industrial chemicals. In most cases, toxicologists are employed only after an initial clinical diagnosis has been made and toxic agents have been identified and tested. Clinical toxicology is the field of medicine that deals with the effects toxic substances have on living tissues and organs. The major units involved in toxicology include the lymphatic system, the immune system, the liver, the lungs, the blood, and the skin. Although toxicologists can use any methods they deem appropriate for their particular diagnosis, they generally follow established procedures and reporting guidelines from various associations and groups.

Toxicology testing is usually performed on patients who have been pronounced deceased at the scene of the incident, but may be responsive to inhalation or ingestion of contaminated fluids. The preferred method of toxicology testing is direct serum enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DSA-ELISA). In this procedure, a panel of specific antigens is incubated with enzyme in a complex buffer, enclosed within a semi-permeable filter paper, for 24 hours. Samples are drawn at regular intervals and analyzed for levels of assigned antigens, and any abnormalities in the test subjects that may suggest toxicological links to the clinical specimens.
