Overview

The Dermatome is a surgical system that is used to produce thin and uniform skin slices from the donor region. Dermatome instruments are used in a variety of surgical procedures, including reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery, chronic burn care, and general surgery. The dermatome kit is used for skin grafting in plastic surgery procedures. Skin grafting is often performed in one of three ways: using the patient’s own skin, using the skin of another patient, or using skin from a non-human source such as a pig.

Different types of dermatome devices include knife dermatome devices, drum dermatome devices, and air driven dermatome devices. The drum dermatome is a cylindrical instrument that is operated manually. Moreover, since electric and air powdered dermatomes provide fast and accurate results, they are more often used by healthcare professionals than manually operated instruments. Knife dermatome does not provide reliable results and must be handled by a highly skilled practitioner.

Drivers

The global dermatome devices market is expected to expand significantly over the forecast period, owing to an increase in the number of cosmetic procedures that need appropriate care, such as skin grafting. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), about 17.7 million cosmetic operations (surgical and minimally invasive) were performed in the United States in 2018.

In addition, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) estimates that 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures were completed in 2017. Breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, tummy tuck, and eyelid surgery were the top five beauty procedures. The same source continued that approximately 300, 378 breast augmentation surgeries, 246, 354 liposuction surgeries, 218,924 nose reshaping surgeries, and 129, 753 tummy truck surgeries were conducted in 2017. According to the same source, around 15.7 million cosmetic invasive procedures were performed.

Another aspect driving the global dermatome product market is the rising number of fatal accidents in the construction industry. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), fatal injuries to building workers were almost four times higher than all other sectors, including engineering, shipping, and storage, in 2019, based on annual average rates from 2014/15 to 2018/19.

Restraints

However, one of the major constraints to the global dermatome device market’s development is a scarcity of qualified professionals who can handle the devices.

Furthermore, due to the limited duration of skin grafting knives, obtaining grafts of the desired thickness is difficult, resulting in a decline in demand for the knife dermatome unit. The global dermatome devices market is anticipated to be hindered by these factors.

Regional Analysis

Due to the widespread presence of key players in the region, North America is projected to have the largest market share in the global dermatome product market. Zimmer Biomet and Aesculap, Inc., are two main players in the global dermatome product market.

Due to the rising number of burn cases in the region, Asia Pacific is projected to have the second largest market share in the global dermatome product market. According to the World Health Organization, over 1000000 people are burned in 2018. The same source adds that around 173000 Bangladeshi children are moderately or seriously burned every year. Moreover, in Nepal, burns are the second most frequent form of injury. According to the same article, the majority of developing countries in Asia Pacific face a greater risk of fire than developed countries in North America. Furthermore, 90% of burns occur at home in Bangladesh and Ethiopia.

Key Players

Major companies contributing in the global dermatome devices market include Richard Wolf Gmbh, De Soutter Medical Ltd, Aygun Surgical Instruments Co. Inc., Surtex Instruments Limited., B. Braun Melsungen AG., Zimmer Biomet, Ltd, Integra Life Sciences Holdings Corporation, Humeca BV, Aesculap, Inc., and Shaanxi Xingmao Industry Co.B. Braun Melsungen AG.
