An ISE (ion selective analyzer) is an analytical tool that measures the electrical potential to determine the activity of ions in aqueous solution. It can be used in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Crystalline electrodes, ion-exchange electrodes, and enzyme electrodes are the four varieties of ISE glass electrodes. A typical form of ISE is the pH Electrode. The pH electrode, which consists of a thin glass membrane that measures the H+ concentration in a solution, is the most widely used. Orion Versa Star Pro pH/ISE is an example of ISE and is manufactured by Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. It is used to check pH and ion concentrations on a regular basis.

Additionally, Beckman Coulter, Inc. produces and sells reagents like buffer, high/low serum norm, high/low urine standard, internal reference solution, and K+/ Na+ selectivity search solution for the quantitative assessment of sodium, potassium, and chloride concentrations in human serum and urine using Beckman Coulter ISE modules.

At the MEDLAB Middle East trade show in February 2020, Erba Mannheim unveiled the EC90, a new electrolyte analyzer. Beckman Coulter Diagnostics revealed in 2017 that its latest DxC 700 AU chemistry analyzer had received FDA clearance and will be commercially available in the United States. The analyzer combines the capabilities of two Beckman Coulter products: the DxC and AU analyzers. Furthermore, the device employs concentrated reagents, long-lasting ISEs, and non-disposable cuvettes. Yumizen C1200 received premarket notice from Horiba, Ltd in 2019. Yumizen C1200 is an automated chemical analyzer that uses reagents, calibrators, quality control (QC) content, and other accessories to measure analytes in samples. Glucose HK, sodium electrode, potassium electrode, and chloride electrode are also used. The test is useful for determining sodium, potassium, and chloride levels in blood and urine samples.

Some benefits of ion selective electrodes over other approaches include their ability to handle sample sizes ranging from 0.1 to 10,000 ppm. Furthermore, they are shock-proof and chemical-resistant, upon calibration, and one can test concentration continuously and analyse the sample within 1 to 2 minutes.
