Food Safety Testing News
FSA is Evaluating the Use of Remote Audits by Local Authorities for Regulating Food Companies.
On April 6th, 2021; Food Standards Agency (FSA) advised local authorities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that remote assessment could be used in some cases to decide which areas to target during a subsequent onsite visit, and in other cases to notify the need for an onsite visit to identify and resolve possible public health risks. Remote audits are the audits conducted by using electronic methods such as video conferencing, email and telephone to obtain audit evidence. Remote audits are conducted in England, Walves and Northern Ireland for food hygiene and food standards checks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote assessments made more structured conversation with food businesses for e.g. use of questionnaires over phone without onsite distractions. Remote assessments were judged to be more appropriate in lower risk businesses as there was less public health risk associated with failing to identify food hazards. The results of assessments are currently being considered by the FSA. This will help to make decisions on any further testing or trials want to undertake to see whether remote methods can be used more often in the future.
Increasing Health Awareness and Growing Number of Technological Developments in This Field are Anticipated to Drive the Market Growth
The major factor driving the growth of global food safety testing market is the increasing health awareness and concerns about food safety, as well as the rapidly increasing international food trade. In addition, growing technical advancements in areas like rapid testing and new research technologies like PCR, Biosensors, chromatography, and other similar technologies are also supplementing the market growth. The food safety testing industry has risen at a rapid rate as a result of outbreaks and contamination like salmonella, E. coli, listeria, and many others. According to WHO, that every year contaminated food causes 600 million cases of foodborne disease and 420000 deaths around the world. Children under the age of 5 account for 30% of all foodborne deaths. Each year, the World Health Organization estimates that 33 million years of healthy life are wasted due to consuming unhealthy food, and this figure is possibly underestimated. For these reasons, the number of food tastings is increasing as the WHO raises awareness of food safety among the citizens as well as announces the new Strict Food Act. However, the rising numbers of individuals staying home and rising cases of Covid-19 patients have increased the need for healthy and safe food.
However, the lack of the food control infrastructure to support the market and complexity in technology may hamper the market growth. In spite of that, developments and innovations in the field of food safety testing methods may offer various opportunities for the further growth of the market.
