Indwelling catheters Market Key Countries Analysis by Size, Share, Trend, Global Analysis, Key Players Demand and Future Strategic Planning by Forecast to 2027

January 13th, 2021 Coherent Market Insights Releases

Indwelling catheters are soft, flexible tube that are used to drain urine from bladder to the collection bag. Indwelling catheters are used in urinary retention (not being able to urinate), urinary incontinence (leakage), during surgery, post operation, and other health problems. Indwelling catheters are of two types such as urethral indwelling catheter, which is inserted through the urethra into the bladder and suprapubic indwelling catheter, which is inserted through the stomach directly into the bladder. Indwelling catheters can be used for long term catheterization and short term catheterization.

Large size indwelling catheters are commonly used for drainage of blood clots. Furthermore, to reduce the risk of clot formation in the bladder and to maintain the indwelling urinary catheter patency, continuous bladder irrigation technique is used. Additionally, previously indwelling catheters were made from latex rubber but now a days silicon coated latex is mostly preferred, owing to longer life span and minimum risk of urinary tract infections.

Global Indwelling catheters Market Drivers

The global indwelling catheters market is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period, owing to high prevalence of chronic urinary retention among people, which drives demand of indwelling catheters. For instance, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney (NIDDK) 2019 report, around 1 in 10 men, who are over the age of 70 and 1 in 3 men who are age of 80 are expected to develop acute urinary retention over a five years of period. Moreover, from the same source, 3 in 100,000 women develop acute urinary retention. Furthermore, according to the same source, acute urinary retention is mostly found in older men as compared to younger men and it increases with age.

Furthermore, in March 2019, Poiesis Medical LLC has announced to receive innovative contract for its Duette Dual Balloon Indwelling Urinary Catheter from Vizient Inc. Therefore, this contract is expected to drive demand of the indwelling catheters in the market.

Global Indwelling Catheters Market Restraints

However, complications associated with the indwelling catheters is increasing among the patients which is a major problem for the healthcare professionals and one of the major restraints for the global indwelling catheters market growth. Patients who have an indwelling urinary catheter for a long time is expected to have complication such as bladder muscle spasm. Additionally, due to bladder spam urine can get leak around the catheter. This makes the patient uncomfortable.  Moreover, due to mucus, protein deposits, or tiny mineral crystals, catheter becomes obstructed, which in turn flow of urine is stopped temporarily.

Furthermore, bacterial infection or fungi enters into the urinary tract, when catheter is inserted into the bladder for long duration of time. This bacteria causes Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) such as changes in the smell of the urine, fever, and changes in the appearance of the urine. Sometimes, patient do not have any symptoms but bacteria grow in urine. Therefore, risks associated with indwelling catheters such as urinary tract infection is expected to hamper growth of the global indwelling catheters market growth.

Global Indwelling Catheters Market Regional Analysis

Among regions, North America is expected to account for highest market share in the global indwelling catheters market, owing to rising prevalence of urinary incontinence among women, which in turn, drives demand for indwelling catheters in the market. For instance, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) 2017 report, in the U.S, urinary incontinence is expected to rise from 18.3. million in 2010             to 28.4 million in 2020, in women. According to the same source, stress urinary incontinence is very common in white women as compared to the Asian American women or African American women.
