Opioid pain killers taken postoperatively are a common way for people to get on the road to becoming drug addicts. Targeted solutions that avoid exposing patients to opioids in the first place may do a great deal to avoid the onset of drug dependency.
Avanos Medical, based in Alpharetta, Georgia, has been making a popular infusion system for local pain control and it has just gotten FDA approval for a new version of the system.
The ON-Q* with Bolus Pump builds on the company’s ON-Q* Pain Relief System, a pump that administers a local anesthetic continuously to a surgical site. The system allows physicians to adjust a flow rate for a given drug, and the patient is set free to wear the product for the next few days while receiving pain therapy.
The new ON-Q* with Bolus Pump also gives patients the option to deliver an extra dose of pain relief by simply pushing a button. This can help completely avoid reliance on opioids post surgery, perhaps putting a solid dent into the current drug epidemic. “The changes we have made to the ON-Q* Bolus pump are a direct result of the feedback we heard from our customers,” in a published statement said Joe Woody, CEO of Avanos. “Non-opioid approaches to pain management continue to be an important issue in the healthcare industry, particularly in light of the opioid crisis. As a leader in non-opioid treatment for acute pain, we are committed to continuously improving our ON-Q* pumps to deliver increased quality of life and satisfaction to all patients.”
