Wearable medical devices are becoming more common, as electronics keep getting smaller, batteries are getting more powerful, and sensors more capable. The success of every wearable, and whether it will be adopted by patients, depends on whether it adheres well to the body and how little management it requires from day to day.
To help developers of medical devices, 3M is releasing a new long-term transfer adhesive that can be used on a variety of medical devices that are stuck to the skin. The 3M Extended Wear Medical Transfer Adhesive, 4075, can laminate all kinds of substrates, and so can be used with a variety of materials.
It can be used for up to two weeks of continuous wear, as long as the backing material is sufficient for allowing moisture and air through. It was tested to meet ISO:10993-5 and ISO:10993-10 standards, which evaluate the cytotoxicity of a product in vitro and whether it will irritate the skin.
“We are excited to broaden our extended wear family with a product that provides customers greater design flexibility by letting them select a wide variety of backings,” in a published statement said Marcello Napol, vice president in 3M’s Medical Solutions Division. “Offering design engineers more patient-friendly adhesive options that provide comfort and a strong, reliable bond is a key part of our mission. Our customers work hard to make a difference in people’s lives, and our goal is to make it easier for them to work with challenging substrates like skin.”
