Concordance Healthcare Solutions, a company affiliated with Purdue University, has developed a medication compliance product that reminds users to take their pills and monitors how they are doing. The Smart Med Reminder system includes electronic caps that fit standard prescription drug bottles, a smartphone app that communicates with the caps, and an online cloud platform that keeps tabs on drug usage, sends out reminders, and provides guidance.
It’s made to be intuitive to use by the user, with the pharmacist programming the settings of the system when fulfilling a prescription. This includes setting a schedule and defining when alarms are to go off. Most of the programming is done automatically by simply scanning a QR code. The code is used to access patient information on dosing and so automatically set the usage schedule on the Smart Med Reminder system. The data on ingestion is shared with the patient’s physician and, if warranted, with family members and caretakers.
The firm believes their product is one of the cheapest of the kind on the market, and its ease of use by the pharmacist and patient make it a serious competitor. The company also hopes to extend the system to include inhalers, pill boxes, and other forms of drugs and packaging.
