Dexcom won European regulatory approval to introduce its Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring system wherever the CE Mark applies. We checked out the system recently to get a better idea of its latest features and how it works.
It’s indicated for diabetes patients that are two years in age or older, effectively eliminating the need to do regular finger prick tests neither for disease management nor to calibrate the sensor. Because the sensor/transmitter that stays on the skin has been reduced in size by nearly 30%, it should help improve patient comfort and makes wearing the device even more discrete.
The new sensor can be worn for up to 10 days straight, through showers and other activities, which is an improvement over the seven day limit of the Dexcom G5. Alarms can be pre-programmed to warn the user, and authorized caretakers, whenever glucose readings are trending toward unhealthy levels.
The system comes with an auto-applicator that lets the user place the sensor on the skin without ever having to see a needle. Once placed and paired with one’s Smartphone, the sensor automatically shares its readings for easy review using a matching app. Additionally, a stand-alone receiver is available, that looks like a smartphone, that is dedicated to managing readings coming from the sensor.
