The NFL (National Football League), having been convinced of the danger of head impacts on its players and the sport overall, has begun a number of initiatives to try to deal with concussions and related injuries. As part of their Play Smart. Play Safe. campaign, the league is releasing a software toolkit to make it easier to design new helmets and to integrate new technologies into helmet design.
The toolkit is free for download and includes finite element models of existing helmets, impact test dummy components, and simulation features to help assess how impacts will actually affect the helmet and the head within.
