BrainCool, a Swedish company, obtained FDA clearance for its IQool Warm System. The device, the name of which seems to be intended to be an oxymoron, can be used to both cool and reheat patients. The company’s first FDA cleared product, the IQool, which looks identical to the newly approved one, is indicated for rapidly cooling the body using pads placed around the head, neck, thighs, and torso.
Cooling the body can have beneficial consequences following strokes and heart attacks, as well as some other conditions. Being able to cool and rewarm a person should provide a lot more leeway for clinicians to perform thermal regulation procedures without harming the patient.
Both systems use the company’s BCCOOL liquid that is non-toxic and doesn’t allow bacteria to grow within it, helping to reduce the chances of infection, though the system is non-invasive.
“We are very pleased to be moving into new clinical applications of our IQool System in the US to combine cooling and warming of patients quickly and effectively,” in a statement said Martin Waleij, CEO of BrainCool. “The implementation of the warming function is essential to offset cooling when reaching target temperature quickly, and maintaining target temperature within narrow limits over time. The cooling process may be enhanced and the added effective warming component aims to add precision to temperature management.
