CurveBeam, based in Warrington, Pennsylvania, won the European CE Mark for its LineUP and InReach extremity CT systems. Unlike conventional CTs, the devices can be placed in smaller spaces, don’t require special shielding, and can be plugged into a regular power socket. Moreover, the amount of radiation absorbed by the patient is significantly reduced.
The LineUP system is designed for weight-bearing applications in which the patient is standing, but can also be used for other leg scans and to scan the hand, wrist, and elbow using a special chair/bed. The InReach system is a more specialized system for hand, wrist, and elbow scans. It won FDA clearance last year.
Both are cone CT systems that produce three-dimensional data that can be navigated using accompanying software. There are features such as software motion correction that help to improve image quality, resulting in a fidelity that was simply unavailable in small offices just a few years ago.
