Philips, in a partnership with Innovative Imaging Technologies, a company out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is releasing the first telemedicine system that transmits live ultrasound images during scans performed by a paramedic or nurse to a physician’s smartphone, tablet, or computer. Audio and video are shared as well, allowing physicians to have a clear sense of the context, how the ultrasound is positioned and used, and what the on-site person is seeing.
The system is based on Philips’ Lumify app-based portable ultrasound coupled with Innovative Imaging Technologies’ Reacts audio/video communication platform. The on-site clinician uses either a tablet or a smartphone with a Lumify transducer plugged into it, while the front and rear cameras can transmit video of the patient or to converse with the remote physician via video.
Philips sees the technology being used to help extend care to remote places, assist with disaster relief, and for ultrasound technique training of medical students, sonographers, and others.
