Lenovo‘s Motorola division along with Vital USA Inc. recently unveiled a modular platform for expanding the capabilities of their smartphones. It’s known as Moto Mod, and it essentially lets you snap on attachments to the back of a phone that can do things such as print photos, play loud music, and provide a way to attach a physical keyboard. To us, though, the interesting attachment is the Vital Moto Mod that lets the user measure his heart rate, breathing rate, blood oxygen concentration (SpO2), temperature, and even blood pressure.
The user simply inserts his finger into the tiny cuff on the back of the device and initiates the measurement process using an accompanying app. The process takes no more than three minutes to obtain all the readings, which are then displayed on the phone, and can be saved for long term analysis and shared with others.
We’re curious and slightly skeptical about the blood pressure readings, but the companies responsible for the device claim that the proprietary cuff technology, that uses a unique inflatable bladder, provides accurate results that are comparable to full-size upper arm cuffs.
Here’s a video demonstrating the Vital Moto Mod:
