Mira is a new compact ovulation predictor device from Mira, a Pleasanton, CA firm, that is based on a fluorescent immunoassay test with 99% accuracy at detecting the Luteinizing hormone (LH), which peaks just before ovulation. At CES 2018 we had a chance to check out the device and talk to co-founded Dr. Zheng Yang, who has a PhD in biophysics and computational biology from University of Pittsburgh.
According to Dr. Yang, for many couples, “starting a family can have its challenges and becomes a bit of a guessing game on the best time to conceive. After looking at the fertility monitors currently available, we found a void for a product that actually learns from a user to clearly provide accurate and personalized insight into when a couple is ready to conceive and guides them through the process–eliminating unnecessary stress and questions. With Mira Fertility, couples that are having issues conceiving can trust that they will be able to fully understand a woman’s individual ovulation cycle and be notified of the best times to conceive through easy to understand charts and personalized notifications.”
Here’s how the device works:
The Mira Fertility monitoring system consists of Mira Fertility Wands that sample urine, a palm-sized and USB-charged Mira Analyzer device, and an iOS and Android app that provides test results and fertility insights. Users simply insert one of the disposable Mira Fertility Wands, after providing an urination sample, into the analyzing device’s Mira Fertility Wand slot. Users will use approximately 15- 20 Mira Wands per cycle.
The Mira Analyzer reads the fertility hormone level and displays on the analyzer’s display screen if LH levels are non-existent, low, medium or high. It then sends this information along with the user’s personal quantitative hormone levels to the accompanying app, which analyzes the data and automatically tracks the individual’s cycle health.
Dr. Yang also tells Medgadget that their fluorescent immunoassay technology is now being tested via a sister company called Quanovate Inc for at-home diagnosis of other conditions, such as infections.
