Usono, a company based in The Netherlands, has created a new kind of ultrasound accessory that is an important diagnostic tool as well as a way to improve reproducibility of ultrasound images. ProbeFix is a fixation system for transthoracic ultrasound probes that allows doctors to effortlessly image patients’ hearts without having to strain to hold the probe in place during exams. At World of Health Care 2017 held in Holland earlier this year, visitors voted Usono the winner of the Smart Solutions Award.
ProbeFix looks like a harness and is put on the patient before a cardiac ultrasound exam begins. Thanks to the design, which incorporates modular probe adapters, almost any cardiac ultrasound probe from most major manufacturers can be used. Not only can the probe be fixed in place, but the angle and position can be adjusted easily without causing discomfort to the patient. The stable and adjustable fixation allows for hands-free ultrasound measurements during lengthy cardiac exams and other time-consuming procedures. As a result, ProbeFix introduces a new level of reproducibility that is unmatched, making this new medical technology an effective way to simplify the exam experience for both doctor and patient. Victor Donker, COO of Usono said, “ProbeFix improves the workflow of cardiologists which enhances the examination quality and therefore a more reliable diagnosis for the patient.”
Usono has already received the CE mark of approval, and the company is now working to get FDA certified. Since its release it has quickly become popular, with distribution and sales in The Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Scandinavian countries being handled by Mermaid Medical, and very recent expansion into the Australian market through Anaeron. Usono is not stopping with ProbeFix, as next year they plan to debut a new type of fixation system for dynamic muscle monitoring.
