Hologic is releasing a new device that helps to make mammographies a bit more comfortable for women. The SmartCurve breast stabilization system is compatible with Hologic’s Genius 3D Mammography system, a product that the FDA has deemed to be even better at detecting lesions than traditional 2D mammography. The company hopes that a less painful experience will get more women to go for regular screenings, helping to stop many cases of cancer early on.
Because the device may affect final image quality, the Genius 3D Mammography system comes with algorithms that make sure to correct any aberrations.
Here’s some data from a recent clinical trial evaluating the SmartCurve:
In a recent clinical study comparing the SmartCurve breast stabilization system to traditional flat paddle compression, the SmartCurve system improved comfort in 93 percent of women who reported moderate to severe discomfort with standard compression. In addition, 95 percent of those surveyed would recommend facilities that use the system. (Smith, A. Improving Patient Comfort in Mammography. Hologic WP-00119 Rev 001 (2017).)
In a bit of an unexpected surprise, here’s the singer Sheryl Crow talking about her experience and how she thinks SmartCurve will help women:
