GE Healthcare won FDA 510(k) clearance to introduce its SIGNA Premier 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner and the system is already being made available to hospitals across the U.S. The device features a 70 centimeter-wide patient bore which is shorter in length compared to similar systems, a high-homogeneity magnet, digital RF transmit and receive components, including 146 independent receiver channels, and a powerful SuperG gradient system. It also includes a 48-channel head coil that can be adjusted to fit even huge American football players with big heads and wide necks, allowing for easier study of a variety of individuals.
It was actually a product of a four year collaboration between GE Healthcare, the National Football League (NFL) that’s now interested in better understanding traumatic brain injuries, and a number of research institutions that have been looking to improve their brain studies.
The SIGNA Premier also comes with machine learning software and online cloud analytics tools to help process and study the obtained data by both researchers and clinicians. It can also be used to quickly assess incoming patients thanks to the built-in HyperSense technology that can perform a head exam in under five minutes.
