MatchMyRx, a free web application that lets patients match their conditions to medications, alerting them of improper prescriptions, controlled substances and off-label indications; now allows patients to report side effects with emojis.
Emojis are a form of electronic communication, used via text messages or emails to express emotions with faces and other types of icons. Currently, patients can report up to 16 side effects through emojis: nausea, drowsiness, insomnia, upset stomach, rash, headache, diarrhea, tremors, constipation, fever, loss of appetite, tachycardia, weakness, sweating, dry mouth or hyperactiveness.
Currently, patients can’t share their experience of taking a specific drug, besides telling their physicians or other formal means with the FDA or other governmental institutions. MatchMyRx wants to share these side effects with other patients that visit the site and are searching for more information about a particular drug.
Through emojis, MatchMyRx believes patients are going to be more open to sharing with other patients, making it easier for people to search for drug-related information that isn’t too technical or directed to healthcare providers.
