Medtronic won FDA regulatory approval and is releasing in the U.S. its Resolute Onyx drug-eluting (zotarolimus) stent. The device is based on the company’s Resolute Integrity device and is available in 4.5 mm and 5.0 mm diameters for patients with larger coronary arteries. It is designed for transradial delivery via a 5 French catheter.
The stent is made out of a single cobalt alloy strand that is twisted and shaped to produce the final form. The exterior is covered with Medtronic’s BioLinx polymer that is an unusual mix of hydrophilic and hydrophobic components that promote healing and help to reduce the chances of clot formations near the stent.
Within the wire portion of the stent is a radiopaque core that makes the device readily visible under X-ray fluoroscopy, helping to position it in the right anatomical spot.
