BrainCool, a company based in Lund, Sweden, landed FDA clearance to introduce its IQool patient cooling system. Pads filled with BrainCool’s “BCCOOL” non-toxic liquid are placed around the patient’s head and neck, thighs, and the torso, and a programmable chiller cools and moves the liquid through the pads.
The pads don’t have any adhesive material on them, but instead mold around the patient to create firm contact. They come pre-filled and are essentially plug-and-play. They can operate independently or as a team, allowing for applicability with different procedures.
The company is touting the quick time it takes to get to temperature and its ability to closely maintain a temperature anywhere between 33°C and 39.5°C (91 F and 103°F). Up two two separate temperature probes can be used to monitor the patient and make the adjustments. The liquid itself is regulated to be anywhere from 4°C and 30°C (39°F and 86°F). All the data collected during a procedure, if needed, can be collected via a memory stick.
The BCCOOL liquid needs changing only once a year as it inhibits any bacterial growth and doesn’t come in contact with patients.
