Ventec Life Systems, a company based in Bothell, Washington, won FDA clearance for its VOCSN portable life support system. A single device provides ventilation, delivers oxygen, helps with coughing (at the touch of a button), has suction capability, and includes a nebulizer to deliver drugs into the lungs. The system weighs 18 pounds in total, which is considerably less than separate devices that do the same.
It is compatible with patients as small as 5 Kg and is intended for premature babies, patients that have lung conditions, those with neuromuscular diseases, and spinal cord injuries. Not all the features offered by the VOCSN have to be used by a patient, so only those that needed are activated.
It has a nine hour battery life and a touchscreen display for controlling the various system functions. Because everything is built-in, people taking care of patients using the system don’t have to switch breathing circuits to activate different features. All that is done through the touchscreen.
