The FDA has given Icare USA, a division of Icare Finland, clearance to introduce its Icare HOME tonometer to the U.S. market. Physicians will now be able to prescribe this device so that intraocular pressure can be measured not only during office visits.
Red and green lights help patients align the device with the eye and it does automatic OD/OS (ocular dexter/ocular sinister) recognition, and since eye drops are not necessary, just about anyone at any time can take pressure readings on their own.
Depending on the setting, with the push of a button, the Icare HOME can either take one reading for a quick assessment or a series of six for maximum accuracy. A little pin with a soft tip pops out and gently touches the eye, jumping right back inside the device.
The readings are sent directly to physicians via the company’s LINK software, allowing checkups at any time.
