Bovie Medical recently received FDA clearance for its J-Plasma generator and handpiece featuring the company’s “COOL-COAG” technology. Bovie has been famous for almost one hundred years for its electrosurgical tools that cut and coagulate tissues. The recently introduced J-Plasma technology pairs cold helium plasma with traditional RF energy delivery to better focus the effective area of the tip to help spare nearby tissue.
In addition to J-Plasma, COOL-COAG offers monopolar coagulation and plasma beam coagulation on the same handpiece. This can be important during certain procedures in which J-Plasma energy is not sufficient to coagulate the bleeding vessels, as can happen when excising tumors, for example. The surgeon can choose either of the features at any time via a button press.
The company expects to begin marketing the technology in the United States later this year.
