BIOTRONIK is releasing the smallest MR conditional tachycardia lead to be available in the United States, the Plexa ProMRI. It’s intended for use in those getting an implantable cardioverter defibrillator or a heart failure device. At 7.8 French (2.6 mm, .10″), it is designed to be easy to advance through tortuous anatomy and the new distal screw design helps physicians position the lead so it reliably stays in place.
The electrical conductivity of the device is improved by having a wire that can handle high currents stretching between the two shock coils, without negatively affecting the life saving electrical properties of the device.
“This is another advancement in efforts to further improve the performance and maneuverability of ICD leads,” in a statement said Dr. Theofanie Mela, an electrophysiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and one of the first in the US to implant the Plexa lead. “Patients who require ICDs are understandably concerned about reliability, and that underscores the need for durable ICD leads to choose from.
