‘Negative pressure wounds therapy (NPWT) device system’ is the most commonly used therapy to treat acute and chronic wounds. These systems promote wound healing, reduce the recurrent use of dressings (as in the case of dressing changes in traditional wound care dressings), provide efficient option for management of closed surgical incision lines, and improve patient well-being. They consist of a vacuum pump, drainage tubing, and a dressing set. The pump may be stationary or portable that relies on AC or battery power, allows for regulation of the suction strength, possesses alarms to indicate loss of suction, and has a replaceable collection canister. The dressing sets contain either foam or gauze dressing to be placed in the wound and an adhesive film drape to seal the wound. The drainage tubes are available in a variety of configurations, depending on the dressings used and the wound being treated.

NPWT devices market is poised to reach $2,746 million by 2022 from $2,082 million in 2015, growing at a CAGR of 4.0% from 2016 to 2022. The growth of NPWT devices market is supported by the rise in incidence of chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and obesity, increase in patient awareness regarding cost-effective NPWT devices such as single-use disposable devices, and casualties caused due to accidents and trauma. However, lack of evidence of clinical effectiveness and high cost of the NPWT devices in developing countries are expected to restrain the market growth.
The report segments the NPWT devices market on the basis of product type, application, end user, and geography. According to the product type, it is bifurcated into single-use NPWT devices and conventional NPWT devices market. On the basis of application, it is divided into chronic wounds and acute wounds. Considering the end-user segment, the market is segregated into hospitals & clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, and home care settings. Geographically, it is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.
Over the past few years, the key players have adopted product development (including product launches, approvals, and clinical trials) as its key developmental strategy. For instance, in 2012, Smith & Nephew launched “PICO,” which is a single-use NPWT device. It is lightweight, disposable, and operates without a canister, and is therefore ideally suited for delivery of NPWT to outpatients, patients at home, and patients who do not want to have restricted mobility. Moreover, reimbursement policies for these devices have further increased the demand for such products. For instance, Medicare created two new HCPCS codes (G0456 & G0457) to provide a mechanism for payment of NPWT using a disposable device that is not durable medical equipment (DME).
