Ethicon, a part of Johnson & Johnson, today announced the release of its new ENSEAL X1 Large Jaw Tissue Sealer for working on vessels and soft tissues in open surgical procedures. This device is a competitor to Medtronic‘s LigaSure Impact, and Ethicon claims it leads to significantly reduced bleeding in thick tissues and less spread of heat beyond the tissues being joined. This is thanks to a larger heating area that spreads the thermal energy and the firm’s “Adaptive Tissue Technology” that detects what it’s working on and delivers the correct amount of energy that will be just sufficient to seal the tissues.
Ethicon touts the device’s ergonomics, which it believes will lead to fewer movements of the hands during a procedure. There’s a separate seal and cut functionally, and the device rotates completely around the shaft to be able to access tissues from all sides.
