OssDsign, a Swedish firm, received FDA clearance to introduce its OSSDSIGN Cranial patient-specific implants for cranioplasty procedures. The implants are made based off of individual patient CT scans and are manufactured using 3D printing. They consist of calcium phosphate composite tiles with titanium in the interior to provide reinforcement.
The company claims its implants do a better job settling in than other existing devices and autologous bone transplants. One of the advantages of the company’s technology is due to the spacing between the calcium phosphate tiles that help tissue grow around the implant. The same spacing provides resistance to cracking, a limitation that many competing implants have.
In studies, the implant has demonstrated low infection rates, fast healing, and successful bone remodeling.
Thanks to the materials used, patients with the OSSDSIGN Cranial will keep the option of getting MRI scans, as long as certain precautions are taken.
