Tandem Diabetes Care will soon be releasing its new t:slim X2 insulin pump and pre-orders are already being taken. The major development over the original t:slim is the ability to upgrade the software within the pump to take advantage of newly developed and approved features. Initially these will include compatibility with the Dexcom G5 continuous glucose monitor and a new algorithm that intelligently pauses insulin delivery to prevent hypoglycemia. There’s now also a Bluetooth radio built-in, so future compatible devices and applications will be able to take advantage of that capability.
The pump has a touchscreen interface and may be even mistaken for a smartphone. Because of that the company even provides an app, called t:simulator, which you can download to your smartphone to try playing with the firm’s pumps before settling on which to go with. A rechargeable battery powers the device and it holds 300 units of insulin when full. And because it’s waterproof, you can even take it swimming.
