Ethicon, a part of J&J, is launching in the U.S. its HARMONIC HD 1000i Shears, having received FDA clearance for the device earlier this summer. The device is intended for surgical procedures requiring high precision craftsmanship, particularly in thoracic and colorectal applications. It can be used in both open and laparoscopic surgeries to disect, transect, and seal tissue without using a separate dissector.
The all-in-one instrument seems to be a disposable product, with the tool and hand piece integrated together into a single device. A similar device from Ethicon had a detachable hand piece that could be used multiple times in different procedures.
“At Ethicon, we challenged ourselves to identify the unmet needs of our customers by speaking with surgeons to understand their concerns in performing complex surgical procedures including oncology. Today, we are proud to launch a unique device that will help improve the clinical outcomes of patients, while enabling procedural efficiencies that can benefit the health system,” said Andrew Ekdahl, President, Ethicon US, in a statement. “HARMONIC HD 1000i is the latest example of our commitment to developing meaningful innovations that reach more patients and restore more lives.”
