Future Reflections, a magazine published by the American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults in partnership with the National Organization of Parents of Blind Children, has devoted its latest issue to STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). One article is written by Matthew Shifrin, a blind high schooler in Massachusetts, whose friend developed a unique notation for assembling LEGO sets that he uses to build complex structures.
One may think that LEGOs wouldn’t interest blind kids, but being able to touch and feel one’s creations that represent the bigger world is a huge draw. Matthew and his friend Lilya have now perfected the notation and used it to create instructions for a couple dozen LEGO sets. Those are available direct from Matthew and he’s looking for volunteers to expand the project to create instructions for more LEGO sets.
