Following up on receiving FDA clearance in the United States, Polyganics, a company out of Groningen, The Netherlands, has now won European CE Mark approval for its NEUROCAP device for prevention of neuromas on severed nerves. Neuromas are abnormal growths that form on broken nerve tips, often leading to painful scarring. Patients get the neuromas surgically removed, but they can often recur, a problem the NEUROCAP is intended to solve.
The tiny bioresorbable device is simply a cap that is placed over a nerve ending, making it difficult for any neuromas to form. The nerve end is sutured into the device to prevent dislocation and the hole at the closed tip of the NEUROCAP is used to attach the device to nearby tissue for long term fixation.
After a while the body eventually gets rid of the material composing the device, but by then the nerve should have healed and the neuroma should not return.
