KB Medical, a firm out of Lausanne, Switzerland, won CE Mark approval to introduce its AQrate Robotic Assistance System in EU countries. The product is used for positioning of instruments and implants during spinal surgery, and can be used in open, percutaneous, and minimally invasive procedures. It can also take advantage of existing navigation systems to make sure things move according to plan.
The system integrates haptic technology within the robot, providing surgeons with force feedback during steering that can help navigate through the anatomy and maintain a desired trajectory. It uses standard, already existing instruments and can be integrated into ORs with already defined surgical flows.
Helping to maintain proper delivery and positioning of tools and implants, the software uses motion tracking, segmentation, and other techniques to constrain and guide the robot’s movement. Stabilization components within the robotic arm and the base of the system guarantee accuracy and rigidity of the entire AQrate system.
The product has yet to receive any U.S. regulatory approvals and for now will remain on the European continent.
