Axonics Modulation Technologies won European regulatory approval for its Sacral Neuromodulation System (SNM), a product designed to treat overactive bladder, urinary retention, and fecal incontinence.
The device is rechargeable, and so can be used for longer periods than similar devices that have to be replaced with new batteries periodically. Overall, Axonics promises a device lifetime of up to 15 years, which the company claims is three time longer than the only other available sacral neuromodulator (Medtronic’s InterStim). Additionally, it’s 60% smaller than the competition.
The implant comes with a wireless at-home charger that lets patients stay active during power-ups. The recharging process takes under two hours and is required every one to three weeks, depending on how much energy was used up since the last power-up.
A touchscreen tablet is used to help place the electrode leads and for programming the implant, and after the procedure patients receive a remote control that looks like a keyless car fob to change the level of the neuromodulation.
