The designers of the popular role-playing video game Deus Ex, which features characters that have impressive prosthetic/orthotic devices with powerful capabilities, have partnered with Open Bionics, an organization developing cheap and open source prostheses. It’s an unusual partnership, but the goal is to create bionic arms that are functional, affordable, and that may even make jealous the rest of us with two boring real hands.
Prosthetics is certainly a challenging field, full of both limitations and expectations. While video game designers may not seem like an obvious choice of folks to help with prostheses development, they have considerable experience modeling the motions of composite hands and fingers while making them look really cool.
