Signostics, a firm based in Bothell, Washington, won FDA clearance for its compact and mobile Uscan ultrasound system. It’s essentially a tablet connected to a transducer that’s tuned for use during urologic visualization procedures.
The device is used to acquire 256 ultrasound bladder slices which are then used to identify the boundaries of the organ and trace it out on the display. The company claims that since conventional bladder scanners use only around eight slices, the additional precision of the slice areas will lead to a lot more accurate results of the total volume.
In addition to measuring bladder volume, the Uscan can be also used to confirm the placement of catheters, image the kidneys, pelvic floor, prostate, and gallbladder, and help diagnose bladder stones.
