Profound Medical, a company based in Toronto, Canada, landed the European CE Mark for its TULSA-PRO prostate ablation system. The technology is designed for the destruction of the entire prostate gland in a single procedure that lasts about an hour.
It relies on an MRI machine to provide real-time planning and guidance in order to deliver the probe via the urethra and position it near the target. Once ready, the ten ultrasound transducers along the probe are selectively activated to deliver energy onto the prostate, heating it and in the process killing its tissue. The probe is slowly rotated in order to deliver the ablative energy across the entire prostate and the MRI machine is used to verify that the heating pattern is accurately delivered.
An endorectal cooling device is used during the procedure to provide cooling and prevent the unwanted destruction of nearby tissues.
