A new smart pillbox that connects to your smartphone or tablet is coming to market from a company called Tricella. The Tricella Pillbox looks like a standard weekly pillbox, but with a lot more pizzazz. Each chamber has a sensor that detects when it was open, an indicator that the pill in that compartment was ingested. It uses low energy Bluetooth wireless connectivity to communicate with a paired phone or tablet. Since little power is used to transfer data, the Tricella Pillbox uses a coin battery to power it for up to a year.
The Tricella app monitors which pills were taken and when, comparing those events to the pre-defined schedule that the person should be following. Any misses or mistakes, such as opening the wrong chamber, will warn the user or any family member whose info is added within the app.
The system will soon be available on Amazon and Target for about $75. We plan on writing a review for the Tricella Pillbox in the near future.
