Boston Scientific is releasing its AXIOS Stent and Electrocautery Enhanced Delivery System for treating pancreatic pseudocysts and certain types of walled-off pancreatic necrosis that result in pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs). The stent is delivered endoscopically under ultrasound guidance and placed so as to allow fluids to drain from the PFC into the GI tract and onward toward ejection from the body. This is currently the only removable stent available for PFC drainage in the U.S.
Boston Sci promises faster procedure times compared to non-electrocautery systems, leading to faster turnovers and less X-ray radiation exposure, and the MRI compatibility of the implant keeps doors open for future diagnostic procedures on the patients. Additionally, placement doesn’t require any additional devices or procedures such as wire exchanges or dilation.
