BIOTRONIK won the European CE Mark to introduce its Ilivia ICD and CRT-D implants that feature the firm’s ProMRI and MRI AutoDetect technologies. MRI-compatible cardiac implants are not new anymore, but existing devices have to be reprogrammed just before the exam and reset back following the scan.
The AutoDetect technology lets a cardiologist schedule an MRI and pre-program the device during the same office appointment. The pre-programming opens a two week window during which the MRI scan is performed. As soon as the patient enters the scanner, the implant detects that it’s inside an MRI machine and automatically switches to the MRI safe mode. Following the scan the device goes back to working as before. To make sure everything went well, the device sends a report to the cardiologist after the MRI scan as soon as it connects to the patient’s BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring station.
The device simplifies the scanning process and essentially gets rid of the programming steps that are normally performed before and after each scan. Moreover, the implant stays in MRI-compatible mode only during the scanning period and so is able to provide therapy to the patient during the maximum time possible.
