BioArchitects, a company with offices in New York City and Sao Paulo, Brazil, won FDA clearance to introduce its titanium patient specific cranial/craniofacial implants. The plates are printed on Arcam AB‘s additive manufacturing 3D printers that use electron beam melting technology designed using CAD based on patient CT or MRI scans. The process involves the company’s design team and the patient’s surgeon working together to create a well fitting implant to within 16 microns of accuracy.
The plates are intended for replacing non-load bearing bones and are attached to existing bony tissue using self-tapping titanium screws.
